Hon. Hassan Usman Sokodabo, the Honourable Member representing Abuja South (Abaji/Kwali/Kuje/Gwagwalada) Federal Constituency, on Friday 24th January 2020 disbursed scholarship to 500 of constituents selected from across the four Area Councils that make up the Federal Constituency.

Non-indigene beneficiaries could not hide their joy as they heard their names being announced and invited to come forward to get their scholarships. According to Issa Itopa Lucky, a non-indigene media aide of the lawmaker, “the selection of non-indigenes to be part of the beneficiaries is part of Honourable Sokodabo’s policy of inclusiveness, regardless of religion, Area Council of residence or tribe”.

Acording to Luqman Okpaki Zakari, the Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to Hon. Hassan Usman Sokodabo, the break down of Hon. Hassan Usman Sokodabo free UTME Scheme is as follows;

“Gwagwalada: 115 applied, 107 were successful.
Kuje: 107 applied, 103 were successful.
Kwali: 122 applied, 117 were successful.
Abaji: 257 applied, 173 were successful.”

Stating further, the Special Assistant on Media and Publicity said “the free UTME Registration initiated by Dr Hassan Usman Sokodabo is to register our brothers and sisters that are academically outstanding and are currently applicants into tertiary institutions.”

“It is not for those that are already in tertiary institutions or graduates or civil servants”, Luqman Okpaki Zakari said.

Hon. Sokodabo also used the opportunity to decry the excessive school fee charges of Federal tertiary institutions, with University of Abuja as a reference point. He complained that the school fees are too much. He revealed that the federal lawmakers on their own part will address the school fees and acceptance fees increment when the National Assembly resumes back from recess this week. The National Assembly would be resuming back from recess on January 28th 2020.

The lawmaker appreciated all who  applied for the scholarship, for trusting it enough, to apply, even though unfortunately, not all the applicants could be selected to be beneficiaries.

He charged the beneficiaries to use the funds for the educational purpose they are meant for, and not for anything else.

He urged the students to continue to study their books, emphasizing that education remains the bedrock of any nation.
